Helpful Storage Tips

Packing your Boxes
  • It's a good idea to list your box contents on note cards, number the boxes to match card numbers, and then use the cards to help when unpacking.
  • Dishes/glassware should be wrapped in paper or bubble wrap; then pak in sturdy boxes.
  • Uniform size boxes provide easier stacking.
  • Do not overpack boxes, as they can rupture when stacked.
Special Notes:
  • Always use a good quality lock for best security.
  • Do not store perishable items in your storage unit (i.e, food, plants or animals).
  • Do not store any hazardous materials. These include items that are flammable, explosive, corrosive, toxic, poisonous, or hazardous to the environment (i.e., chlorine, gasoline, paint, acids, pesticides, ammunition, etc.)
  • Do not store items which are illegal or stolen.
  • Make a complete list of all of your stored goods. Include sales receipts, proof of purchase, owner's manuals and warranties to prove ownership, if that becomes necessary. Keep these records in a safe place separate from your storage space.
Packing your Residential Items
  • Uniform size boxes provide easier stacking.
  • Inventory your stored items (see Special Notes)
  • Pictures/mirrors should be wrapped in special mirror crates, the box marked "FRAGILE", and stored on end.
  • Larger appliances can be used to pack bedding, linens, and clothes. Make sure they are clean and dry, and leave doors slightly ajar to prevent mildew.
  • Rub a small amount of machine oil on metal tools, bicycles, and equipment for rust prevention. Drain and clean all equipment before storing.
  • Pack no more than 30 pounds of books in a box, laying them flat to preserve their spines.
  • Load furniture first and boxes last in the truck.
  • Clothing, rugs and anything with fabric should be clean to prevent attracting pests.
Packing Commercial/Business Items
  • Pack no more than 30 pounds of books in a box, laying them flat to preserve their spines.
  • Use free standing shelves for documents and file boxes.
  • Inventory your stored items (see Special Notes)
  • Rub a small amount of machine oil on metal tools and equipment for rust/corrosion prevention. Drain and clean all equipment before storing.
Packing your Storage Space
  • Consider placing pallets or plastic on the floor first. Heavy rainfall could potentially cause minor flooding in the units, and positioning your belongings (especially mattresses) off of the concrete floor is recommended.
  • Be sure to leave yourself a walkway to the rear of the unit.
  • Place items near the front that you use most often
  • Position your valuables in the rear of the storage unit.
  • Tables with removable legs and bed frames should be dismantled to save room in your unit. Wrap all hardware and mark it. Draw a diagram if necessary.
  • If you have freestanding shelves, use them to help you organize your unit.
  • Store sofas and love seats on end (except sofa beds), wrapped in heavy blankets.
  • Use drawers as additional storage space.
  • If a table does not disassemble, place padding on the floor and invert it (with legs pointing up).
  • Most dining table chairs can be stacked "seat to seat" or placed upside down on other furniture.
  • Keep upholstered furniture off the floor. Use plastic covers over upholstered items and mattresses.
